Gris Gris is the beach which is located in the extreme south of the island, off the historical village of Souillac which dates back from the days of the then French Isle de France. The one that tops the must-go list is definitely the breathtakingly beautiful Gris Gris. This little piece of beach does not have coral reef, the big waves come breaking on the shore offering an amazing views to the visitors. Gris Gris offers a contrast with the other beaches in the South popular for their calm sea. From the grassy cliff top viewpoint, one can go down to sea level and a unique sandy beach.

Gris Gris, No Swimming
The term “gris gris” traditionally refers to black magic, and looking at the tortuous coastline, you can see how the area got its name. A path leads down to the wild and empty Gris Gris beach, where a wooden sign warns you of the dangers of swimming here. So do not be tempted into the sea by the golden beach. Swimming here is extremely dangerous and strictly prohibited.
Gris Gris is the only place in Mauritius where swimming is strongly discouraged for hobbyists and professionals, strong currents and huge waves breaking on this part of the island makes it totally impractical. Gris Gris is more than a viewing platform. A short walking trail that begins behind the car park leads to the Weeping Rock and The Blowhole. This is where the waves hit the rocks and are thrown back into the sea with equal force. The only break in the otherwise perfect barrier reefs circling Mauritius occurs in the South. This explains the angry waves crashing on the cliffs.
Cliffs & Impressive Waves
This destination has everything you would want from a beach holiday. As well as astoundingly beautiful beaches, there are cliffs that provide an amazing view of the horizon. The beach itself is normally quiet and secluded. There are no reefs protecting the coast from the Indian Ocean, but it creates some dramatic and impressive waves.
It is an ideal tourist spot just for the reason that it brings you close to nature. A simple walk by the shores fills you up with immense tranquility, joy and positive energy. The place gives a truly amazing opportunity to take great pictures, but the mist from salty sea water is in the air everywhere, so be sure to protect your lens as it may cause some damage!
